Professionals, whose job it is to tackle serious odour problems, such as those that follow a fire, flood and decomposition commonly use ozone generators to get the job done. Hotels and used car dealers also use ozone generators to reduce embedded odours caused by cigarette smoking. However, ozone is a lung irritant and can pose serious health problems if it is used incorrectly.
Ozone is the strongest oxidising (odour removal) agent commercially available, when used properly it is safe to handle. The primary reason is that it cannot be stored and, therefore must be generated and used on-site. It is safer than the use of chemicals as ozone (O3) is short lived lasting for only 15-20 minutes, so after ozone oxidises or disinfects, it decomposes into oxygen. It is made both commercially and naturally by a high voltage electrical discharge process which converts oxygen (O2) into ozone. For instance, it is ozone that gives the distinctly fresh odour you can smell after an electrical thunderstorm. Man-made ozone simply mimics nature’s manufacture in devices known as Ozone Generators.
Ozone can remove odours from:
- Crime scenes
- Cigarette smell from vehicles
- Death scenes
- Blood and feces odour removal
- Mould and mildew
- Fire damage and smoke
- Pet smells
- Paint smells (occupants can occupy the building immediately after it is painted)
- Boats, ships, aircraft
- Funeral parlours
- Bowling allies and pubs (deodorisation of alcohol, smoke odours and bowling shoes)
